Danae Mossman is a New Zealand curator who has worked in contemporary art galleries in New Zealand, Canada and the UK. Danae has a particular interest in creating links between contemporary art and other areas of cultural production, so that art can contribute its voice to intellectual, social and political debate.
In 2006, Danae co-curated TRANS VERSA: Conversing Across the South with Dr Zara Stanhope. The exhibition reflected the historical, geographical and botanical similarities between Australia, Chile and New Zealand, which all have a Pacific Ocean coastline and were colonised by a European country. As the curators, Danae and Zara wanted to create an exhibition of new art that involved the Chilean, Australian and New Zealand artists working together. They aimed to stimulate dialogue about cultural similarities and differences, and encourage the artists to form new relationships and networks.
Between 2004 and 2007, Danae was the director of The Physics Room, which is a contemporary art space in Christchurch. While director, she presented more than 30 exhibitions, developed an artist residency programme, and produced numerous publications, events and performances. In 2010, Danae co-founded the Hopkinson Mossman gallery in Auckland, which exhibited the work of prominent Australian and New Zealand artists, many of whom also exhibit their work in Latin America. In 2019, the gallery was renamed Mossman and Danae also opened a second Mossman gallery in Wellington. Both galleries are now closed.

“We wanted TRANS VERSA to open up the logic of contemporary art’s ‘international’ language to more personal and intimate engagements. This was the point of being there – taking initial research and layering this with actual experiences in Santiago.”
